Trend: Prairie Girl

Spring/Summer is often awash with delicate florals and romantic shapes and this season's pieces have taken a nostalgic turn as Prairie Girl styling returns. The inspiration behind the trend goes back to the 1830s, a time when clothing was hand sewn and for many to cloth the family meant undertaking the whole garment process from spinning yarn to sewing the piece together. The fashion of the era became prominent due to 80s drama "Little House on the Prairie" which centred around a hard-working family who lived on a farm. Their clothing was practical for the outdoors, suitable for the extremes of weather and sustainable through a hard days work. Whilst these factors are not usually the basis of a fashion trend, the clothing style had a romantic, free spirit feel which has provided designers with the inspiration for feminine, floral designs with the Prairie style injection.

The Prairie Girl trend was seen across the catwalks from Valentino to Alexander McQueen and Erdem. However, this season's take on the trend had a modern twist with designers incorporating sheer materials, cropped layers and shorter dress lengths, something that would not have been seen in the 1830s. Styling of the trend was simple with the dress creating the focus, accessories kept minimum and shoes either the complementary flatform sandals or ankle boots to toughen the look.

Moncler Gamme Rouge & Erdem

Whilst the catwalks made styling the trend look easy, this is a difficult trend to get right. The dress was a key piece on the catwalks, however to translate the look from the catwalk add a leather jacket or some biker boots to ensure the style does not become too fancy dress and less chic. Easier to style pieces are yoke blouses, which pair nicely with a blue denim pinafore or jeans and the ruffle skirt which can be paired with light-knight jumper to provide that modern injection. Accessories for the look should be minimal, a delicate necklace or choker will add a nice compliment but be careful not to overpopulate the look.

Prairie Girl incorporates feminine, floral designs with a free-spirit attitude and with the modern twists introduced by designers on the catwalk, this trend is set to dominate this season.
